How to Stop Buying So Much Makeup

Previously in this blog we have talked about the types of makeup you don’t need. As much as we love makeup, there are some things we need to take into consideration before we purchase a new product. If you are not sure where to start, we got you. Now, as a follow up to our previous article, we would like to share with you some tips on how to stop buying so much makeup products and save money.

1. Check Your Collection

If you are a beauty lover, chances are you have bought some makeup in the past that still lays around in your collection. Before you are thinking of buying any new products, go through your collection and see if you have something similar that potentially dupe the item you are about to buy. Sometimes, you may already have something in your collection that you don’t need to buy something new.

2. Ask Yourself: Do I Really Need This?

Let’s face it, none of us need a hundred eyeshadow palettes and fifty different highlighters in our collection. We only have one face and chances are everything would expire before we finish them up. Therefore before purchasing anything new, we should ask ourselves the question “do I really need this?”. Especially when purchasing something in a category which you already have plenty of products before

3. Let It Rest Before Deciding

Shopping when you are under the hype is never a good idea. When you are thinking of buying something, let it rest for at least 24 hours, best if you wait for a week or two, and see if you still wanted the item.

Often we are influenced by social media and influencers or “limited edition” sales that you end up buying something in the heat of the moment that you will regret later on. So unless it is something you’ve been keeping an eye on for a while, think about it before making a purchase.

4. Test It Out in Person Before Purchasing

Sometimes what we see online is not what we get in person, the same goes for a lot of beauty products. Something may have a high hype around it, everyone may be saying that foundation is the best thing ever or that eyeshadow palette is so pigmented and smooth. However,  sometimes, you just have to check it out yourself. Go to your local Sephora or other beauty retailers and check the product out in person. The reality is, some products can be underwhelming in person after you have tested it.

5. Have Standards on What Works for You

Know yourself and what you like, it does not matter how great that red lipstick might be on other people, but if you know you are not a red lipstick wearer, don’t buy it.

If you have dry skin, don’t buy foundations that were formulated for oily skin, no matter how much some influencers say they love it. Have standards on what works for you and stick with it.

6. Make a List and Wait Until Sale

Just like grocery shopping, it’s best if we make a list of the products to buy beforehand to avoid any impulse purchase. Sometimes we can get carried away with seeing so much makeup on display and buying things we didn’t want in the first place just because it’s accessible. Making a list will prevent you from doing that.

When you do want to get something, we highly suggest to wait until there’s a sale going on. Places like Sephora often have sales these days, around two to three times a year. Wait for this moment and enjoy what you have in the meantime.

Conclusion

Those were some ways on how to stop buying so much makeup. While shopping for makeup can be fun, we need to be mindful of our own purchases and make use of what we already have as well. Not only will we feel more content with ourselves in the long run, we will create less waste and better, save money.
