Perfume Mistakes People Make

Most people love buying and using perfumes. However, sometimes they lack the knowledge and understanding of how to properly use and store their perfume. You may also be one of these people. This time, we will break down several perfume mistakes people make and learn how to use and store our perfume correctly.

1. Storing Your Perfume in The Bathroom

Let’s start with storing. One of the biggest mistake people make is storing their perfume in the bathroom. Bathroom stores a lot of heat and humidity which is terrible for your perfume.

This could shorten the shelf life of your perfume and change the scent of your perfume quickly, not in a good way. Instead, store your perfume in a cool, dark and dry place.

2. Storing Bottle Near Sunlight

Similar to the previous point, storing your bottle near the sunlight will get it exposed to a lot of heat. Some of the essential oils used in perfumery are sensitive to heat and light.

You will make your perfume go bad easily and alter its scent just by placing it near sunlight.

We recommend you to store your perfume in a shelf away from sunlight.

3. Using Coffee to Neutralize Scent

There is this misconception that you should be using coffee to neutralize scent. The truth it, coffee doesn’t do much in neutralizing scents.

Instead, if you want to neutralize your nose after sampling a particular perfume, sniff the part of your hand that doesn’t have any perfume on and then test out the scent you want.

4. Blind Buying Scents Without Sampling

A lot of people tend to fall into the hype of certain perfumes and end up blind buying it without sampling it first.

The problem is, everyone’s nose and preference is different.

What someone else likes may smell terrible to you.

Always sample first so you don’t end up making a purchase your regret.

5. Rubbing The Wrist Together

It bothers us so much when someone does this and it’s still commonly used.

Rubbing your wrist together can produce heat that break down the molecules of the perfume you are wearing, hence erasing / changing the top / middle notes of the fragrance and causing it to last shorter than expected.

Instead, you can just gently pat the perfume to even it out if you want.

6. Expecting Natural Perfumes to Last

Natural ingredients in perfume doesn’t usually last that long compared to synthetic ingredients. Especially with certain ingredients like citrus accord. Don’t expect your natural perfumes to last as long and you will save yourself some disappointment.

7. Not Allowing Perfume to Perform till The Base

Another mistake people make when testing out a perfume is not allowing the perfume to perform till the base.

Some perfumes can have amazing opening which is a common tactic used to get you to purchase that perfume upon first sampling. However, some perfumes develop throughout the wear and you may not like how it turns out at the base.

Similarly, some perfume can have ‘terrible’ opening but if you just wait for it to develop, it can be one of the most amazing scent you’ve ever smelt. So always allow the perfume to perform till the base before making your whole judgement.

8. Using only one perfume

Some people claim themselves as minimalist and use only one signature perfume for every day. The problem is, our nose and sense of smell will get too used to the perfume that we end up unable to smell it anymore.

In other words, we get anosmic toward the perfume. What’s the point if you can’t enjoy it yourself? Switch out your perfume once in a while so your nose get a break and you can enjoy your favorite scent again.

9. Losing Your Perfume Cap

This is an absolute tragedy for any perfume owners. Losing your perfume cap means allowing oxygen to constantly flow into your perfume bottle. Again, this will shorten the life span of your perfume, causing it to turn bad faster.

Conclusion

As you can see, the way you store and it your perfume can have a massive impact on the longevity and wear of it. Make sure you don’t do any of these mistakes and you should be fine.
